I had the privilege of photographing Stef and Brett's New Year's Eve wedding here in December 2025. They used the museum for portraits and formal photos in the evening — after the church ceremony and before their Fort Garry Hotel reception — and even with just a couple of hours, we filled an entire gallery's worth of images that feel like nothing else in their collection. Venue 02 — The Fort Garry Hotel

If the CMHR is Winnipeg's most dramatic venue, the Fort Garry Hotel is its most elegant. Opened in 1913 as a grand railway hotel, the Fort Garry has hosted over a century of Winnipeg's most important celebrations — and it shows in the best possible way. The ballroom is one of the most beautiful rooms in the province: soaring ceilings, crystal chandeliers, warm amber lighting, and a grandeur that makes every guest feel like they've stepped into another era.

I photographed Stef and Brett's reception here after their CMHR portraits, and the Fort Garry delivered what it always delivers — a venue that requires almost no effort to make beautiful. The marble lobby, the ornate corridors, and even the elevator doors are stunning backdrops for couple portraits. Venue 03 — Buttercup Café & Celebration Hall

For couples who've always imagined a summer wedding surrounded by nature — an outdoor ceremony under a timber frame, golden light filtering through the trees, reception dinner in a glass greenhouse with the prairie stretching to the horizon — Buttercup Café is the answer. It's one of the most thoughtfully designed wedding venues in Manitoba, and it photographs in a way that feels completely different from anything you'd find inside city limits.

I shot Erin and Jayden's August wedding here in 2025 and it remains one of my favourite wedding days of the year. The timber pavilion ceremony space creates beautiful dappled light and a sense of openness that no indoor ceremony can replicate. The glass greenhouse reception hall is stunning in the evening — candlelit, warm, intimate — and the surrounding fields and gardens give you an almost unlimited canvas for portraits at golden hour. Venue 04 — Holy Rosary Cathedral

For couples planning a Catholic ceremony in Winnipeg, Holy Rosary Cathedral on Edmonton Street is among the most photogenic churches in the province. Built in 1914, the cathedral's soaring Gothic arches, ornate altar, stained glass windows, and long centre aisle create a ceremony environment that is genuinely breathtaking — both for the couple standing at the altar and for the photographer documenting it.

Venue 05 — Breezy Bend Country Club

Tucked west of the city along the Assiniboine River, Breezy Bend Country Club is Winnipeg's most beautifully landscaped wedding venue. Venue 06 — Rudy's Eat & Drink

If the CMHR is Winnipeg's most architecturally dramatic wedding venue, Rudy's Eat & Drink is its coolest. Located in Winnipeg's Exchange District, Rudy's is a full-service restaurant and event space with industrial-chic bones — exposed brick, Edison bulbs, warm wood, and floor-to-ceiling windows with a downtown skyline view. It's the venue for couples who want their wedding to feel like the best night of their lives, not a formal ceremony in a ballroom.

Dave and Bailey's wedding at Rudy's was exactly that. It was intimate, it was loose, it was deeply fun — and the photography reflected it. The warm interior light, the skyline backdrop, the candid moments at the bar — Rudy's gives photographers a rich, layered visual environment that works beautifully even after the sun goes down. If you're planning a smaller wedding (under 120 guests) and want a venue with genuine personality, Rudy's is worth a very serious look.

Rudy's is a working restaurant and event space, so availability and event buyouts should be confirmed directly with their events team. The capacity is best suited to smaller, more intimate guest lists — if you're planning 150+ guests, you'll want to look at larger venues. That said, for couples prioritizing atmosphere, personality, and a truly fun night, smaller guest counts at Rudy's often produce a better experience than a half-empty ballroom at a larger venue. Venue 07 — Ashgrove Acres

If you want golden hour that makes your jaw drop, Ashgrove Acres is the answer. This countryside property outside Winnipeg is one of the most photogenic wedding venues in Manitoba — and one of the most underbooked, which means you're less likely to have a wedding that looks like everyone else's. The white fence. The open fields. The mature trees. The light that arrives in long, horizontal beams in the last hour before sunset. It's the kind of venue that doesn't need you to bring much — the land does the work.

Brandon and Selena's summer wedding at Ashgrove Acres was one of my favourite days I've ever shot. The outdoor ceremony was set among the trees, the tented reception had chandeliers and white draping and coral florals by Callia Flowers, and then the golden hour portraits happened — and everything else fell away. That image of them twirling in front of the white fence, sun flare coming through, the whole Manitoba sky behind them? That's why I shoot weddings.

Ashgrove Acres is the right venue for couples who want a countryside aesthetic without roughing it. The property is well-maintained, the tented reception space is genuinely elegant, and the grounds offer enough visual variety to keep a full wedding day interesting from first look to last dance. From a photography standpoint, the single most important thing about Ashgrove Acres is the light. Manitoba summer evenings are long — the sun doesn't fully set until after 9 PM near the solstice — and at Ashgrove Acres, that light filters across the property in a way that feels cinematic without any effort. If you schedule your portraits for the last hour before sunset, you will have images that genuinely look like magazine work. The property's open fields, white fence, and tree lines create natural framing and depth that most photographers only dream about.

Venue 08 — The Leaf at Assiniboine Park

The Leaf opened in 2022 as part of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy's expansion and immediately became one of the most unique wedding venues in all of Canada — not just Winnipeg. It's a world-class botanical garden housed in a sweeping glass and steel building designed to evoke a giant leaf in cross-section. Inside, multiple climate-controlled biomes hold thousands of plant species from tropical, arid, and diverse ecosystems. The centrepiece is a dramatic living plant wall — a floor-to-ceiling tapestry of green in every texture — and the tropical biome, with towering palms and tree ferns under a vaulted glass ceiling, is unlike anything else you can book in Manitoba.

I photographed Liam and Tanya's intimate 4-person wedding here in summer 2025 — just the two of them, two witnesses, and the botanical garden. The ceremony images from inside The Leaf's tropical biome are among the most striking I've made: the couple surrounded by palms, soft glass-filtered light overhead, the kiss framed by tropical fronds in black and white. And then they walked outside to the tree-lined promenade of Assiniboine Park for portraits — two completely different worlds within five minutes of each other.

The Leaf gives you something no other venue in Winnipeg can: a genuinely living backdrop. The tropical biome's soaring palms, layered ferns, and glass ceiling create a photography environment that looks completely different from any ballroom, barn, or country club. The diffused light from the glass roof is soft and flattering — no harsh shadows, no colour casting from artificial lights. The living plant wall provides a graphic, textured backdrop that photographs strikingly in both colour and black and white. And then walking outside to Assiniboine Park immediately doubles your portrait options: tree-lined avenues, English Garden paths, open meadows, and soft green canopy light.

Prairie Acreages & Rural Manitoba Venues

Some of the most memorable weddings I've photographed have been on private acreages and rural Manitoba properties — where the sky is wide, the horizon is endless, and golden hour lasts forever. If you're open to a venue outside city limits, Manitoba's rural landscape is one of the most underrated wedding backdrops in Canada. The prairies in late summer are genuinely extraordinary.
