What Makes It Special for Photography
The Leaf gives you something no other venue in Winnipeg can: a genuinely living backdrop. The tropical biome's soaring palms, layered ferns, and glass ceiling create a photography environment that looks completely different from any ballroom, barn, or country club. The diffused light from the glass roof is soft and flattering — no harsh shadows, no colour casting from artificial lights. The living plant wall provides a graphic, textured backdrop that photographs strikingly in both colour and black and white. And then walking outside to Assiniboine Park immediately doubles your portrait options: tree-lined avenues, English Garden paths, open meadows, and soft green canopy light.
Things to Know Before You Book
The Leaf is particularly well-suited to intimate and small weddings — 4 to 30 guests — where the botanical garden setting can be experienced fully rather than overwhelmed by a large crowd. Contact the Assiniboine Park Conservancy directly to inquire about ceremony bookings. Read the full story of Liam & Tanya's intimate wedding at The Leaf here.
Also Worth Knowing — Honourable Mentions
Beyond the eight venues above — where I have personally shot weddings — here are several other Winnipeg and Manitoba wedding venues that regularly come up in conversations with couples I work with:
The Forks National Historic Site
The Forks is one of Winnipeg's most beloved gathering places and a beautiful backdrop for outdoor ceremonies and portraits. The riverwalk, the historic warehouse district, and the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers all offer distinctive photographic opportunities. Several event spaces within The Forks complex are available for receptions. Especially photogenic at blue hour and in winter with the skating rink lit up.
Inn at the Forks
Winnipeg's most contemporary boutique hotel, located at The Forks with views of the river. The Inn at the Forks offers a modern, clean aesthetic that photographs beautifully for couples who want something sleek and editorial rather than historic or grand. Their event spaces pair well with outdoor portraits at The Forks riverwalk.
Prairie Acreages & Rural Manitoba Venues
Some of the most memorable weddings I've photographed have been on private acreages and rural Manitoba properties — where the sky is wide, the horizon is endless, and golden hour lasts forever. If you're open to a venue outside city limits, Manitoba's rural landscape is one of the most underrated wedding backdrops in Canada. The prairies in late summer are genuinely extraordinary.
