The engagement session is where everything starts. Before the wedding day, before the timeline, before the nerves — it's the one shoot that belongs entirely to you. Picking the right location isn't about finding the prettiest backdrop. It's about finding the place that gives your photos a context, a mood, a reason to exist. After years of shooting across Winnipeg and Manitoba, here are the locations I recommend most often — and why each one works.

Location 01 — Manitoba Legislative Building

If you want drama, you want the Leg. The Manitoba Legislative Building is one of the most architecturally extraordinary buildings in Canada — Beaux-Arts limestone, a grand marble staircase, soaring arched ceilings, and a rotunda that floods the interior with natural light from above. As a photographer, I've shot here multiple times and I am still not bored of it. Every angle produces something different.

The interior staircase is the obvious location — and it delivers every time. The scale of it makes couples look small in the best way: elegant and intentional, like a still from a film set somewhere in Europe. The limestone walls provide a neutral, warm-toned background that flatters every skin tone and clothing colour. The light from the dome diffuses beautifully throughout the day.

The exterior grounds are equally strong. The stone archways on the south facade, the steps leading up to the Golden Boy, the colonnaded walkways — all of it photographs with a timeless formality that pairs beautifully with more relaxed, candid couple moments. Shoot the architecture, then let them just walk and talk. The contrast works.

Best For Formal, classic couples; dramatic portraits
Access Public building — open during business hours

What Makes It Special for Photography

The combination of scale and light is unmatched anywhere else in Winnipeg. The staircase gives you perspective lines that draw the eye directly to the couple. The limestone and marble reflect light beautifully, eliminating harsh shadows. Both the interior and exterior give you completely different looks within the same session — formal grandeur inside, romantic architectural detail outside.

Best Time to Shoot

Midday interior light from the dome is soft and even — great for avoiding shadows. For the exterior grounds, late afternoon (around 3–5 PM) gives you warm, directional light on the stone facade. The building is generally less crowded on weekday mornings, which makes for cleaner background framing on the staircase.

Location 02 — The Fort Garry Hotel

The Fort Garry Hotel is Winnipeg's most elegant indoor engagement session setting. The lobby's wood-paneled walls, high ceilings, tall windows, and ornate architectural details create a warm, editorial atmosphere that photographs beautifully at almost any time of day. It's the kind of place that makes couples feel like they're in a different era — and that feeling comes through in every frame.

For couples who want something intimate and moody — dark walls, rich texture, quiet corners — the Fort Garry delivers in ways that outdoor locations simply can't. The interior light is consistently flattering, which makes it a reliable choice any time of year. And there's something deeply Winnipeg about it: this is a city landmark that has witnessed a century of significant moments. Yours deserves to be among them.

Style Luxury / Intimate / Moody
Best For Indoor sessions, winter, editorial couples
Location 222 Broadway, Winnipeg

What Makes It Special for Photography

The Fort Garry's interior light is consistently warm and directional — window light pours in from tall, south-facing windows and creates a natural studio quality that's hard to replicate elsewhere. The wood paneling and ornate architectural details give every image texture and depth. It works beautifully in colour and in black and white. Couples who are camera-shy often find the structured, familiar environment of a hotel lobby helps them relax faster than an open outdoor setting.

Best Time to Shoot

Late morning to early afternoon, when window light is at its strongest, is ideal for the main lobby areas. The hotel is quieter on weekday mornings. Coordinate with the hotel's events team before your session to confirm public access to specific spaces — some areas may be reserved for events on certain days.

"The Fort Garry is where you go when you want your engagement photos to feel like stills from a film. There's no other hotel in Winnipeg quite like it."

Location 03 — Assiniboine Park

Assiniboine Park is Winnipeg's most versatile outdoor engagement location — not because it has one outstanding feature, but because it has half a dozen of them within walking distance of each other. The English garden, the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, the wooded riverside paths, the duck pond, the open meadow near the zoo — each section gives you a completely different look and feel, which means a single 90-minute session can produce images that appear to have been taken in four or five different places.

It's also the most approachable location on this list. Couples who feel nervous about being photographed tend to relax fastest somewhere that already feels familiar and comfortable. Assiniboine Park is a place people already know and love — which makes it easier to be natural in front of the camera.

Style Natural / Relaxed / Versatile
Best For All couples, especially those new to being photographed
Season Beautiful year-round; peak in summer and fall

What Makes It Special for Photography

The variety. In one session you can move through the formal English garden (structured, symmetrical, classic), the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden (intimate, lush, textured), and the riverside paths (open, natural, romantic). Fall colour here is genuinely spectacular — the tree canopy along the paths turns orange and gold in late September and early October in a way that makes almost every frame look like a painting.

Best Time to Shoot

Golden hour — the 90 minutes before sunset — is the best time at Assiniboine Park in every season. The riverside paths especially catch warm directional light through the tree canopy during this window. Summer evenings give you until 9–9:30 PM of usable light, which means you can start late and shoot into the blue hour.

Location 04 — Assiniboine Park Conservatory

The Assiniboine Park Conservatory is one of Winnipeg's best-kept secrets for engagement photography — a lush tropical greenhouse in the middle of a prairie city, open year-round, warm even in February. The oversized palm fronds, dense tropical foliage, and soft diffused greenhouse light create a moody, intimate environment that photographs beautifully in both colour and black and white.

For winter sessions, this is particularly valuable. When it's -30°C outside and the prairies are bleak, the conservatory gives you a completely different world — warm, green, tropical, and completely unexpected. The contrast between winter Winnipeg and the greenhouse interior is one of the most interesting aesthetic choices available to couples planning an off-season session.

Style Tropical / Moody / Editorial
Best For Winter sessions, couples wanting something unexpected
Access Open year-round; small admission fee

What Makes It Special for Photography

The combination of lush, layered greenery and soft overhead light creates a naturally flattering, high-contrast environment. The large tropical leaves provide graphic framing for portraits, and the warm, humid air means couples stay comfortable even on the coldest winter days. It works exceptionally well for black and white — the tonal contrast between light skin, dark clothing, and dense foliage is compelling.

Best Time to Shoot

Overcast days are ideal — the diffused outdoor light through the greenhouse panels is softest and most even without direct sun. The conservatory opens at 9 AM and is least crowded on weekday mornings. Check seasonal hours before booking, as they may vary.

Location 05 — Birds Hill Provincial Park

Birds Hill Provincial Park — 35 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg — is where you go when you want your engagement photos to feel genuinely cinematic. The park's signature feature is its tall jack pine forest: straight, impossibly tall trees rising from a sandy forest floor, through which late afternoon light cuts in long, dramatic shafts. There is nothing else like it near Winnipeg.

The pines create natural framing in every direction. You can shoot wide and let the trees form a cathedral around the couple, or come in close and use the trunks as graphic vertical elements that draw the eye downward through the frame. Motion blur — walking through the forest at a slower shutter speed — produces dreamy, almost painterly images that are uniquely possible in this environment.

Style Cinematic / Natural / Adventurous
Best For Couples who want to feel the session, not pose it
Distance ~35 km from Winnipeg (40 min drive)

What Makes It Special for Photography

The light. Birds Hill's pine forest catches golden hour sunlight in a way that city locations simply cannot — long, warm shafts cutting through the vertical tree trunks at low angles, creating a naturally lit environment that no studio can replicate. The sandy forest floor is soft and clean, and the lack of underbrush means you can move freely through the trees. It's also large enough that you rarely encounter other people during a session, which lets couples genuinely relax.

Best Time to Shoot

Golden hour, without question. Plan to arrive 90 minutes before sunset so you have time to find the right stand of trees and settle in before the light peaks. Summer golden hour at Birds Hill falls around 8:30–9:30 PM — late enough that you can shoot an evening session after work. Fall sessions in September and October add a carpet of golden pine needles and early colour to the mix.

"Birds Hill in late August at golden hour is the best light I've ever shot in within 30 minutes of Winnipeg. It's not close."

Location 06 — Frozen Prairie Lakes

This one is uniquely Manitoban. In winter, the province's countless lakes freeze into vast, flat, snow-dusted surfaces — and from the air, they become one of the most visually arresting natural environments I've ever worked in. Aerial drone photography of couples on a frozen lake is something you simply cannot replicate in most parts of the world, and the results are consistently unlike anything else in wedding and engagement photography.

Ice fishing is a Manitoba winter institution, and the ice fishing holes left on frozen lakes create natural circular patterns that read as graphic design from above. A couple lying together on the ice, surrounded by those holes, with the vast white surface extending in every direction — it's an image that stops people when they see it. It's also an experience. Getting out onto the ice together, the cold and the quiet and the sheer scale of it, is the kind of thing couples remember.

Style Aerial / Minimal / Uniquely Manitoban
Best For Winter couples, aerial photography, adventurous sessions
Season January–February (when ice is thick and safe)

What Makes It Special for Photography

Scale and graphic simplicity. The frozen lake surface eliminates every competing visual element — no trees, no buildings, no context — just the couple and the vast white expanse. From above with a drone, the geometric patterns of ice fishing holes become a compositional element that frames the couple in a way that feels intentional and designed. It's one of those locations where the environment does extraordinary work.

Things to Know Before You Book

Ice safety is non-negotiable. A frozen lake session should only happen when ice thickness has been verified as safe for the number of people on it — ideally on a lake that's already established as a local ice fishing spot, which means locals have already assessed and trusted the conditions. Dress for -20°C to -30°C with windchill, which means technical base layers, insulated outerwear, and hand warmers. Sessions move quickly because of the cold, but the images are worth it every time.

Location 07 — Open Prairie at Golden Hour

The Manitoba prairies at golden hour are a completely different proposition from any urban or forested location. There is no framing, no shelter, no architectural context — just open sky, long flat horizon, and light that comes in at an impossibly low angle and turns everything it touches gold. It's the most honest representation of where we actually live. And from the air, it produces images of a scale and beauty that I have not seen replicated in other Canadian provinces.

Prairie engagement sessions require a different mindset: you are not finding a backdrop, you are choosing to exist inside a landscape. The couple becomes the subject against something vast. It's humbling and cinematic in equal measure. The best prairie sessions involve movement — walking, spinning, looking out — rather than static poses. Let the landscape do the heavy lifting, and stay out of the way of the light.

Nick & Kiera — open prairie, golden hour. This is what Manitoba looks like from the air in late summer.
Style Cinematic / Expansive / Prairie
Best For Aerial photography, wide-open landscapes, late summer
Season Late June through September; peak in August

What Makes It Special for Photography

The sky. Manitoba prairie sky at golden hour is unlike anything else — vast, layered, and completely unpredictable in the best way. On a clear evening you get long warm light; on a partly cloudy evening you get dramatic gradients and god-rays cutting through the clouds. From the air with a drone, the scale of the landscape and the couple's small figures within it creates an image that is intrinsically Manitoban. There is no other word for it.

Best Time to Shoot

This is exclusively a golden hour location. Arrive at the location with time to explore before the light peaks — once it arrives, it moves fast. August is the absolute peak: the fields are at their richest, the light is warmest, and sunset comes late enough to shoot after most people have had dinner. Give yourself 60–90 minutes of working time on location.

Also Worth Knowing — Honourable Mentions

Beyond the seven locations above, here are several others that come up regularly in conversations with Winnipeg-area couples I work with:

The Forks National Historic Site

The confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, with its stone riverwalk, warehouse district architecture, and views of the downtown skyline, is one of Winnipeg's most versatile photography locations. It works for both urban-editorial and relaxed-natural styles and is especially beautiful at blue hour in any season.

The Exchange District

Winnipeg's historic warehouse district — red brick facades, wide cobblestone alleys, industrial architecture with a contemporary edge — is ideal for couples who want an urban, editorial engagement session. The best light hits the brick walls in late afternoon; the alleyways are quietest on weekday evenings.

Kildonan Park

Often overlooked in favour of Assiniboine, Kildonan Park offers similarly beautiful wooded paths, a creek, and large open meadows — with fewer visitors. The weeping willow trees near the creek are particularly photogenic in early summer. A quieter, more intimate alternative to Assiniboine for couples who want a nature session without the crowds.

Private Acreages & Rural Properties

If you or someone you know has a rural property — a farm, a cabin, a family acreage — consider shooting there. The personal history of a place adds a layer of meaning to engagement photos that no public park can replicate. Barn doors, field paths, weathered wood, and familiar landscapes make for some of the most emotionally resonant engagement images I've ever produced.

Questions & Answers

Engagement sessions in Winnipeg —
your questions answered

Where are the best places to take engagement photos in Winnipeg?

The best engagement photo locations in Winnipeg include the Manitoba Legislative Building (for dramatic architectural interiors), The Fort Garry Hotel (for warm, elegant indoor sessions), Assiniboine Park (for gardens and wooded outdoor sessions), Birds Hill Provincial Park (for pine forest portraits), and the open Manitoba prairies at golden hour. Each location offers a completely different aesthetic — from architectural grandeur to natural prairie beauty.

Can you do an engagement session at the Manitoba Legislative Building?

Yes — the Manitoba Legislative Building allows photography in its public areas, including the grand marble staircase and main rotunda. The building is open to the public during regular business hours and no special permits are required for personal photography in public spaces. It's worth confirming current access policies before your session, as some interior areas may have restrictions during events or renovations.

When is the best time of year for an engagement session in Winnipeg?

Every season offers something distinct. Summer gives you long golden hours and lush greenery. Fall (September–October) brings spectacular colour at Assiniboine Park and Birds Hill. Winter is underrated — frozen lakes, snow-covered prairies, and the moody blue light of a Manitoba winter create images unlike any other season. Spring offers fresh greenery and quieter locations. There's no wrong answer — it comes down to which aesthetic speaks most to you as a couple.

How long is a Winnipeg engagement session?

Most sessions run 60–90 minutes — enough time to move between two or three different settings within the same location, capture a range of looks, and let both people genuinely relax. Sessions ending at golden hour tend to produce the most beautiful images. If you want to move between multiple locations across the city, a two-hour session allows more flexibility.

What should we wear to our engagement session?

Wear something you feel genuinely comfortable in, and coordinate without matching. Solid colours and simple patterns photograph cleaner than busy prints. For outdoor locations like Birds Hill or the prairies, earthy neutrals and soft tones work beautifully against natural landscapes. For architectural locations like the Legislative Building or Fort Garry Hotel, slightly more formal dress creates a cohesive editorial aesthetic. In winter, prioritize warmth and layer intentionally — cold couples don't look comfortable.
