Best For
Aerial photography, wide-open landscapes, late summer
Season
Late June through September; peak in August
What Makes It Special for Photography
The sky. Manitoba prairie sky at golden hour is unlike anything else — vast, layered, and completely unpredictable in the best way. On a clear evening you get long warm light; on a partly cloudy evening you get dramatic gradients and god-rays cutting through the clouds. From the air with a drone, the scale of the landscape and the couple's small figures within it creates an image that is intrinsically Manitoban. There is no other word for it.
Best Time to Shoot
This is exclusively a golden hour location. Arrive at the location with time to explore before the light peaks — once it arrives, it moves fast. August is the absolute peak: the fields are at their richest, the light is warmest, and sunset comes late enough to shoot after most people have had dinner. Give yourself 60–90 minutes of working time on location.
Also Worth Knowing — Honourable Mentions
Beyond the seven locations above, here are several others that come up regularly in conversations with Winnipeg-area couples I work with:
The Forks National Historic Site
The confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, with its stone riverwalk, warehouse district architecture, and views of the downtown skyline, is one of Winnipeg's most versatile photography locations. It works for both urban-editorial and relaxed-natural styles and is especially beautiful at blue hour in any season.
The Exchange District
Winnipeg's historic warehouse district — red brick facades, wide cobblestone alleys, industrial architecture with a contemporary edge — is ideal for couples who want an urban, editorial engagement session. The best light hits the brick walls in late afternoon; the alleyways are quietest on weekday evenings.
Kildonan Park
Often overlooked in favour of Assiniboine, Kildonan Park offers similarly beautiful wooded paths, a creek, and large open meadows — with fewer visitors. The weeping willow trees near the creek are particularly photogenic in early summer. A quieter, more intimate alternative to Assiniboine for couples who want a nature session without the crowds.
Private Acreages & Rural Properties
If you or someone you know has a rural property — a farm, a cabin, a family acreage — consider shooting there. The personal history of a place adds a layer of meaning to engagement photos that no public park can replicate. Barn doors, field paths, weathered wood, and familiar landscapes make for some of the most emotionally resonant engagement images I've ever produced.
