Orange dahlias. Lavender bridesmaids. A groom in a deep plum suit, mid-swing on the fairway at golden hour. Paul and Ayanna's wedding at Breezy Bend Country Club was one of those days that looked like someone had dialled the saturation up on everything — except it was all completely real. The colour, the joy, the chaos of everyone loving each other. This is the full album.

The Details

Before a single frame of anyone's face, the details tell you everything. Ayanna's engagement ring — a round solitaire with a diamond band — nested into the heart of an orange dahlia, petals open, everything dark and close and intentional. Her earrings were vintage-cut clusters, heirloom-feeling, the kind you notice in every photo for the rest of the day. I always spend the first thirty minutes of a wedding morning shooting details, and this morning gave me more than I could use.

The bouquet by Juniper Jayne Creative deserves its own paragraph. Orange dahlias, mauve garden roses, purple lisianthus, yellow sunflowers, trailing greenery — it was sculptural and wild and completely specific to Ayanna. That bouquet appears in probably a third of the images from this wedding, and it earns its place in every single one.

Getting Ready

Getting ready happened at a hotel suite with good window light and controlled chaos. Ayanna's mom helped her put on her earrings — that quiet, careful moment at the window, both of them concentrating — and it was one of those frames that writes itself. You don't direct it. You just have to be in the right position when it happens.

The bridesmaids wore a gradient of lavender to deep purple — different shades, same family — which made the group shots feel curated without being matchy. Ayanna's off-shoulder ballgown was from 7th Avenue Fashions, and the moment she was fully dressed and holding that bouquet, you could feel the whole room shift.

The Reveal

There is nothing in wedding photography quite like the group reveal — the moment the bride walks out and every person who loves her sees her for the first time. I've photographed a lot of these moments, and Paul and Ayanna's was one of the best. She stepped out, bouquet in hand, and the crowd erupted. Mouths open, hands over faces, bridesmaids grabbing each other. Pure, unfiltered reaction. Nobody was performing. Everybody just lost it.

I shot this from behind Ayanna, looking out at the crowd, which meant I caught every face at once — the gasps, the tears being held back, the people already laughing. It's the kind of frame that makes you grateful you were there.

The Ceremony

The ceremony was held at a Catholic church in Winnipeg with a long central nave, stained glass windows casting coloured light through the pews, and the kind of Gothic interior scale that makes everything feel both grand and deeply personal. I shot from the back as Ayanna was announced — her framed in the doorway, the whole church stretching ahead of her — and then again as she walked toward the altar, the congregation rising on both sides.

There's a frame I always try to get: the groom's face the moment he first sees her. Paul's expression — caught between composure and complete disbelief — gave me exactly what I was looking for. That moment is never posed and never predictable, which is why it's always the one that matters most.

Wedding Party Portraits

After the ceremony, we moved to Breezy Bend for portraits. The property has a kind of generous beauty to it — perennial garden beds in full late-summer bloom, mature trees with early hints of fall colour, the warm cedar-toned clubhouse in the background. As a Winnipeg wedding photographer, I always appreciate a venue where the environment does some of the work. Breezy Bend is one of those places.

The wedding party portraits were exactly what you'd expect from this crew — loud, funny, completely their own. The bridesmaids descended on Ayanna's train the moment she stepped onto the grass, which gave me one of my favourite frames of the day: everyone orbiting her at once, half helping, half laughing. You can't choreograph that energy. You can only be ready for it.

Just the Two of You

Paul had changed into his deep plum suit for portraits, which against Ayanna's white ballgown and the lavender bridesmaids was almost comically perfect. The colour palette for the whole day cohered like someone had planned it for months — because they had. When he kissed her cheek and Ayanna broke into that smile, holding the bouquet in front of them both, that's the frame I knew would be the one.

We moved through the gardens — garden beds, the clubhouse wall, a quiet corner near the fence — and the two of them just kept giving me moments. A first look in black and white, close and quiet. A spin that turned into a laugh. The way he looked at her when she wasn't looking back. These are the portraits that end up framed.

Golden Hour on the Course

This is the part of the day I'd been looking forward to since we first met. Breezy Bend's golf course at late-summer golden hour is one of those locations that rewards patience — the light comes in low and warm across the fairways, the grass turns a deep saturated green, and the sky behind you does whatever it wants. Ayanna climbed onto a golf cart in front of the clubhouse, bouquet in her lap, gown pooling around her, completely at ease — and it was one of those frames where you just know.

Paul, being Paul, decided that the best use of a golden hour portrait session was to actually hit a golf shot. I was not going to argue with that. He teed it up, swung, and Ayanna stood thirty metres back in her gown. It was absurd and perfect. That frame is everything this wedding was in a single image.

After the golf shot, we slowed down. Just the two of them on the fairway, leaning into each other, the sun going down behind the trees. Ayanna rested her head on his shoulder and he laughed at something neither of us heard. The sky behind them went full gold and cloud and drama. Those are the frames nobody planned and nobody can replicate.

The Reception

By the time the reception started, the whole day had built to this. The room was loud and warm and full of people who had clearly been waiting all summer for an excuse to celebrate. The speeches were heartfelt and funny in equal measure. The floral design from Planned Perfectly and Wanted & Wild Co. carried the same wild, colourful energy as the bouquet all the way through the tablescapes.

The wedding party had the kind of easy chemistry on the dance floor that makes a reception feel effortless to photograph. By the end of the night, the whole crowd had their arms up and nobody wanted to leave. That's the mark of a wedding that was genuinely, completely itself.

Tips for Breezy Bend Couples

Protect the golden hour window in your timeline

In late summer, golden hour at Breezy Bend falls roughly 7–8 PM. Build your portrait block to end on the course during that window. The 45 minutes before and after sunset on those fairways is genuinely some of the most beautiful light available at any Winnipeg-area wedding venue. Talk to your photographer about a timeline that protects that window — it's worth rearranging everything else to get it.

Gardens first, golf course last

The gardens near the clubhouse are beautiful in full afternoon light — colourful flowers, interesting textures, good dappled shade. Start your formal and wedding party portraits there, then move to the open fairways for your couple session as the light drops and softens. The contrast between the two environments gives you a much more dynamic gallery.

Let your wedding party be themselves

Paul and Ayanna's wedding party didn't need direction — they needed a camera pointed at them and permission to be exactly who they are. If your people have that energy, lean into it. Some of the best images from this day came from moments that were completely unscripted. The golf shot. The crowd reaction. The train fix. All of it happened without me asking.

Lean into the country club setting

Some couples feel self-conscious about incorporating the golf course into their photos. Don't. Breezy Bend is a stunning venue precisely because of the open landscape — wide-angle views, dramatic skies, and a sense of scale you simply can't replicate indoors. Use the whole property. As a Winnipeg wedding photographer who's worked at Breezy Bend, I'll always advocate for at least 20 minutes on the fairway. It earns its place every time.

Paul and Ayanna — this day was everything. The colours, the chaos, the golf shot, the golden hour, the way your whole crew showed up for you. I couldn't have asked for a more alive wedding to photograph. Thank you for having me.
