The Leaf at Assiniboine Park
Wedding Photography

Tropical light. Living walls. A venue unlike any other in Winnipeg.

The Leaf opened in 2022 as part of the Assiniboine Park redevelopment and quickly became one of the most visually distinctive wedding venues in the city. The biomes — a tropical dome and a Mediterranean dome — create a lush, greenhouse atmosphere that photographs beautifully in every season. Step inside on a January morning and you're surrounded by towering palms, broad ferns, and warm diffused light filtering through a glass ceiling that the Manitoba winter can't touch.

The living walls, the English Garden pathways, the meadow behind the venue — there's no shortage of stunning backdrops. Every backdrop here is different, and all of them are genuinely alive. For a wedding photographer, The Leaf offers what few Winnipeg venues can: real natural beauty indoors and out, in January or July.

I've photographed here and I can tell you firsthand — it's one of those locations where you arrive with a shot list and leave with frames you didn't plan. The light moves through the glass in unexpected ways. The textures are extraordinary. It rewards patience and it rewards wandering.

Why The Leaf photographs beautifully

The Living Walls

The living walls are arguably the most Instagram-recognizable feature of The Leaf — deep, textured green that frames portraits with a richness you can't fake with any backdrop. At two to three people maximum, they're intimate rather than wide, which makes them perfect for quiet couple portraits and bridal solo shots. I've come back to these walls in every session I've photographed here and they never stop delivering.

The Biomes

The tropical biome gives a warmth and lushness that looks almost otherworldly in winter. The glass ceiling floods the space with soft, diffused natural light — the kind of light that wraps around faces and makes the ordinary luminous. The Mediterranean dome is airier and brighter, with a different palette of textures and forms. Together they give you two completely distinct looks within the same building.

The English Garden

Behind the venue, the English Garden has winding paths, stone features, and golden afternoon light that pours through the plantings in a way that feels curated without being manufactured. It's quieter out here — removed from the entrance and the crowds — and the quality of portraiture you can achieve in the late afternoon light on these paths is genuinely exceptional. It's the kind of light I'd drive an hour to find, and it's right here.

Year-Round Versatility

Most Winnipeg venues have a prime season. The Leaf doesn't. The biomes are independent of the weather outside, which means a February wedding photographs with the same lush, tropical richness as an August one. The contrast between deep winter and the warm interior of the tropical dome creates a visual tension that's unique to this venue — and uniquely beautiful. If you're considering a winter wedding in Winnipeg, The Leaf belongs at the top of your list.

Liam & Tanya — An intimate ceremony in the biome

Liam and Tanya chose to keep their wedding to four people: just the two of them, two witnesses, and the botanical world of The Leaf as their backdrop. The ceremony was held inside the tropical biome — surrounded by palms, ferns, and the quiet hum of a living garden — and the intimacy of the space matched the intimacy of what they were doing perfectly. When there are no rows of chairs and no crowd to play to, the ceremony becomes something else entirely. Every gesture, every glance, every breath of a vow carries full weight.

After the ceremony we moved through the garden — portraits against the living wall, then out to the English Garden pathways in the late afternoon, then back inside as the light shifted through the glass dome. The session was unhurried and quiet, and the photographs reflect that. The first kiss, under the towering tropical palms in black and white — that frame tells you everything about who these two people are and what their day actually was. It's the kind of photograph that only happens when a venue is this alive and a couple is this present.

Tips for your Leaf portrait session

Keep the living wall intimate

The living wall works best with two to three people maximum. It's a portrait backdrop, not a group shot wall — tight, richly textured, and designed for closeness. Resist the urge to pull the whole wedding party in front of it. Two people against that green depth is the frame you'll treasure. Plan to spend at least fifteen minutes here and let the session breathe.

Book time in both the garden and the biome

Don't choose one or the other — build portrait time in both the English Garden and the tropical biome, because they're completely different looks. The garden gives you natural light, golden hour colour, and organic depth. The biome gives you lush warmth, tropical texture, and a quality of light that's unlike anything else in Winnipeg. Together, they create a gallery that tells the full story of this venue.

Winter weddings here are magical — don't let the season stop you

I can't say this strongly enough: winter weddings at The Leaf are some of the most visually arresting work I've produced in this city. The contrast of Manitoba's deep winter outside and the warm tropical interior creates something genuinely cinematic. If you've been hesitant about a winter date because of the weather, The Leaf removes that concern entirely. Lean into the season — the photographs will be extraordinary for it.

What makes The Leaf special for wedding photography?

The Leaf offers something genuinely rare: extraordinary natural backdrops indoors and out, in every season. The living plant wall creates a deep green texture that's unlike any other portrait backdrop in the city. The tropical biome has a lush, almost otherworldly quality — especially dramatic in winter when the contrast between Manitoba's cold and the warm interior is most vivid. The English Garden has winding paths and golden afternoon light. As a photographer, I've never worked anywhere else in Winnipeg that gives you this much visual variety within a five-minute walk.

Is The Leaf a good wedding venue for winter weddings?

Arguably The Leaf is at its most visually compelling in winter. While the rest of Winnipeg is buried in snow, the tropical biome is warm, green, and lush — an otherworldly backdrop that creates stunning visual contrast with the cold light outside. Winter weddings at The Leaf photograph with a drama and uniqueness that summer simply can't match. If you're planning a November through March wedding in Winnipeg, The Leaf belongs at the top of your venue list.
