AJ & Julie —
The Legislature

When AJ and Julie told me they wanted to do their engagement session inside the Manitoba Legislative Building, I said yes before they finished the sentence. The Legislature is one of the most architecturally extraordinary buildings in Canada — let alone Winnipeg — and almost nobody thinks to use it for photography. Grand limestone staircases. A soaring rotunda. Arched corridors that go on forever. Greek key marble floors that reflect the light. AJ and Julie walked in and owned it completely.

The Building

The Manitoba Legislative Building was completed in 1920, designed in a Neoclassical style that was meant to project permanence, authority, and beauty in equal measure. It succeeded on all three counts. What it didn't know it was also doing was creating one of the most exceptional photography locations in the province. The limestone interior — warm, golden, textured — photographs in a way that no modern building can replicate. Every wall is a backdrop. Every column creates depth. Every corridor offers a natural leading line that pulls the eye exactly where you want it.

AJ wore a crisp white dress shirt with a blush tie and black trousers. Julie wore a dusty rose chiffon dress that caught the warm tones of the stone perfectly. Against the limestone and marble, they looked like they'd stepped out of a film. We hadn't even started and the building was already doing half my job for me.

The Grand Staircase

The main staircase of the Manitoba Legislative Building is the kind of architectural statement that makes you stop walking and just look up. The staircase splits and rises toward the rotunda, flanked by carved stone balustrades and lit by the building's warm interior sconces. The proportions are extraordinary — wide enough that two people on it feel both monumental and intimate at the same time. It's one of those rare locations where the wide shot and the close shot are equally good for completely different reasons.

My favourite frame from the whole session is the one where AJ is at the bottom of the staircase, walking toward Julie, who's waiting for him halfway up. It's just the two of them, the full width of the staircase around them, the vaulted arch filling the frame above. It's the kind of image that doesn't need any explanation. The building says everything.

We also worked the rotunda — the domed space above the staircase where the building opens up completely. In black and white, with the couple walking hand-in-hand up the stairs and the dome rising behind them, it becomes something closer to a painting than a photograph.

The Corridors

Beyond the staircase, the Legislative Building has corridors. Long, arched, perfectly symmetrical corridors with polished stone floors and globe pendant lights that recede into the distance. Photographically, they're a gift — the kind of leading-line composition that works every time. AJ and Julie walking hand-in-hand through that corridor, laughing, completely in their own world, with the arches repeating behind them for what looks like forever: that's a frame that explains itself.

We also found pockets within the building — a pair of arched alcoves that framed them like a painting, and a stone bench along one of the exterior walls where we did some of the more editorial work. Julie seated, AJ standing beside her, both looking off — the light from the windows coming across the limestone in that cool, directional way that makes stone look like it's glowing. The outfits worked perfectly in this context. The architecture and the couple were having a conversation.

The Ring

Julie's ring is a statement. A round solitaire on a delicate band, the kind that catches the light from across a room. Inside the Legislative Building, where the warm stone bounces and softens every source of light, the ring photographs in a way that feels almost cinematic. We spent time on the detail shots — hands together on the staircase, the ring against AJ's chest as she reaches up in an embrace, a close solo frame of the stone catching the light. In black and white, the contrast is clean and striking. In colour, the warmth of the stone sets it off beautifully. We shot it both ways.

Outside — A Champagne Toast

We finished outside, on the Legislative Building's south lawn. The grounds are beautiful — wide open, manicured, with the historic Government House behind them and the Winnipeg skyline in the distance. The late fall colours were still on the trees, and the overcast sky gave us that soft, even light that makes colours pop without any harshness. AJ popped the champagne — badly, in the best possible way — and then they poured, laughed, toasted, and forgot I was there entirely. That's the one. When couples forget about the camera is always when the best frames happen.

Why the Legislature

The Manitoba Legislative Building gives you something that no park, no café, no urban alleyway can give you: genuine architectural grandeur. The scale of the building — the height of the ceilings, the width of the staircases, the depth of the corridors — creates images with a kind of weight and permanence that's rare in engagement photography. It's not a trendy backdrop. It's a building that was designed to last centuries, and it shows in every frame.

If you're planning an engagement session in Winnipeg and want something that stands apart from the usual parks and patios, I'd strongly recommend the Legislature as a starting point. It pairs beautifully with a short walk to the surrounding grounds for outdoor portraits, giving you genuine variety within a single session. It's also completely free to access during public hours — one of Winnipeg's most underused photography secrets.

Questions & Answers

FAQ — Engagement Sessions at
the Manitoba Legislature

Can you do an engagement photo session inside the Manitoba Legislative Building?

Yes — the Manitoba Legislative Building is open for photography and is one of the most stunning architectural spaces in the province. The building's grand staircase, rotunda, arched corridors, and marble floors provide exceptional backgrounds for engagement and portrait sessions. Photography permits may be required depending on your session. Contact the Manitoba Legislative Assembly's public affairs office to confirm current access policies before booking.

What are the best locations for engagement photos in Winnipeg?

Winnipeg has an exceptional range of engagement session locations — from the dramatic interior architecture of the Manitoba Legislative Building, to the lush garden paths of Assiniboine Park, the historic Exchange District, The Forks riverwalk, and the English Garden. For indoor sessions, the Legislature is unmatched for grandeur. For outdoor sessions, Assiniboine Park and St. Boniface are consistent favourites. I've put together a full guide to the best engagement session locations in Winnipeg on this site.

What should we wear for an engagement session at the Manitoba Legislative Building?

The Legislature's warm limestone and marble photograph best with elevated, classic outfits — think semi-formal. A tailored dress shirt and trousers, a midi or mini dress in a soft, muted colour. Avoid loud prints or large logos, which compete with the architecture. AJ and Julie's combination of a white dress shirt with a blush tie and a dusty rose chiffon dress worked beautifully against the warm stone. If you're planning to head outside afterward, consider a second outfit — the grounds are greener and more casual than the interior.
